Coaler Homecoming is underway

It’s Homecoming week at Coal City High School and a variety of activities are planned to celebrate the Coalers.
“As in many high schools, it is one of the biggest events of the school year, and one of the most memorable ones,” said Sara Anderson, the school’s student council advisor.
Each year, the high school student council prepares a week full of activities and dress up days.  Unlike most years, this year’s homecoming celebration is just four days, as the week began with a holiday.
When students arrived on Tuesday morning, Sept. 4, many were excited for a groovy Tuesday in their 70s inspired attire.
Tuesday also served as the homecoming volleyball match, with the Lady Coalers hosting Lisle.
Wednesday is designated as Class Color Day. The golf team is set to hit the links at Cinder Ridge Golf Course for a 4:15 round against Beecher.
The day will culminate with Spirit Night, an event that is comprised of a series of class competitions. Each class will assign students to a series of games from dodgeball and toilet paper wrap, to tug of war and ships and sailors.
Spirit Night is also the night for the annual Powder Puff game when the classes ask their female athletes to play a tournament of flag football.
“Every year, Powder Puff never fails to be the highlight of Spirit Night,” Anderson said.
Tacky Tourist Day is the theme for Thursday. The day will also serve as the homecoming contest for the soccer team, which hosts Plano at 4:30 p.m. The girls tennis squad will also play its homecoming match against Gibson City-Melvin Sibley starting at 4:30 p.m.
Friday is all about showing school spirit as students are encouraged to wear their green, gold and white. The annual pep assembly will take place in the afternoon and will be led by  English teacher Kara Erb. Student council members will oversee a host of competitions including musical chairs, limbo, nylon knock down and balloon pass.
The focus of the assembly is to get the football team and its fans pumped for the homecoming game that evening against Herscher.
The football team will be introduced, the cheerleaders, poms and band will perform, as always the Coaler Dusters will make an appearance.
Homecoming 2018 will wrap up on Saturday, Sept. 6 with a dance at the high school.
