Coal City man arrested for predatory criminal sexual assault

STEFF L. NICHOLS

A Coal City man was arrested Wednesday on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
Steff L. Nichols, 30, was taken into custody without incident after turning himself in at the Coal City Police Department.
According to a release issued by Sgt. Tom Logan, the department was made aware of an alleged criminal sexual assault perpetuated by the suspect on numerous occasions. The crimes occurred in Coal City during 2018 and 2019.
An extensive investigation into the Nov. 12 report was conducted into the allegations. Logan reports the legal guidance of the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office was heavily relied upon during the investigation.
With approval of the state’s attorney’s office, Nichols was arrested.
The case is still under investigation and will be reviewed for further charges.
As of Thursday morning, a court date had not been assigned in the case and bond is pending that appearance.
Due to the victim being a juvenile at the time the crimes occurred, Logan said no further information will be released.
