Classes canceled Monday for Wilmington schools

Restaurants and taverns must also close until March 30

This story is being updated from its original version...Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced at 4:30 p.m. Friday that all schools in Illinois will be closed starting Monday through March 30. That means Wilmington school district students will have an extra week added to their Spring break in statewide efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus

The Wilmington school district will be closed Monday to students. The closure would be at least 2 weeks if not longer, and includes the previously scheduled spring break. District 209-U Superintendent Matt Swick issued a statement at 4 p.m. Sunday that classes would be canceled beginning Monday for students while teachers will attend for an in-service day.

“We thought it was important to communicate in advance of this meeting for parents to begin planning as soon as possible for a potential long-term school cancellation.

On Friday District administration advised students to a clean their lockers of books, calculators, etc.—basic school supplies—just in case the cancellation is in effect beginning Monday morning.

“All athletic and co-curricular activities will also be canceled until further notice. Access to district school facilities by any outside organizations would also be denied during any school cancellation.”

On Monday, teachers will attend to prepare for the possibility of some potential e-learning / technology opportunities for students. Students who need to obtain books and school supplies can visit the school for quick visits.

 “We will still have staff in attendance on Monday in order to complete the necessary planning and preparation for e-learning curriculum & activities.

Gov. Pritzker has mandated that schools remain closed until at least March 30. That is also a governor order for restaurants and bars with sit down facilities. Restaurants with carry out serves and delivery can remain open.
