CCHS senior parents planning celebration parade for Sunday

Parents of the Coal City High School class of 2020 are planning an informal graduation day parade.
Instead of another typical day in quarantine, the parents are choosing to make the most of what should have been the day their children dressed in cap and gown, and gathered in the high school gymnasium to accepted their diplomas and words of congratulations from their teachers, administrators and friends.
Instead of sitting at home, the senior parents plan to drive their senior student around town beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 17—the date and time of the originally scheduled commencement ceremony.
The event came together quickly on Tuesday and the planned route has the group starting at Coal City Early Childhood Center on Carbon Hill Road. The procession will travel north turning right on McArdle Road passing through the village of Carbon Hill as the group makes its way to North Broadway.
Vehicles will then turn right on Broadway going past Coal City Elementary School and then left on Division Street as the group passes Coal City Intermediate School. Students and parents will then take Berta Road and Spring Road to get back to Carbon Hill Road for a second pass by Coal City Middle School before the procession ends at the high school.
Community members are encouraged to step outside to cheer on the Coaler graduates as they pass by. As noted it’s a big route so there is plenty of room to maintain proper social distancing.
Rain or shine (after all it is Illinois) that’s the senior parents plan to mark graduation day.
Any changes to the route will be shared on the newspaper’s social media pages.
The Unit 1 School District has set two alternate dates to recognize the class, the first being Saturday, June 27 and the alternate, Saturday, July 25.
