Lady Coalers pick up first win, split series with Joliet West

    The Coal City varsity softball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, when they split a double-header with Joliet West.
    The Lady Coalers (1-5 overall, 0-1 conference) dropped the first game in five innings, losing by 10 runs, 11-1, but rallied back in the second game to win it, 6-3.
    Coal City recorded its only run of the first game in the first inning.
    Sydney Miller got thing started, as she was hit by a pitch to advance to first. She reached third on a sacrifice from Abbie Cullick, who reached on an error.

Reed-Custer sweeps Prairie Central thanks to grand slam

    Reed-Custer’s varsity baseball team continued its winnings ways on Saturday, as they swept Prairie Central, 9-6 and 13-11.
    In the first game, the Comets picked up the win thanks to a grand slam from Dan Fierro.
    Heading into the sixth frame the game was tied 5-5.
    Hunter Murawski got things started with a double, which was followed by a single from Sam Lepper, who reached base on an error.
    Wilkins wound up receiving a walk, loading the bases.

Coalers pick up first conference win, defeat Herscher in comeback

    The Coal City varsity baseball team picked up a big conference win Friday with comeback win over visiting Herscher, 4-3.
    Herscher grabbed a one-run lead in the third inning, and built a 3-0 advantage in the sixth.
    Coal City (7-4 overall, 1-0 conference) had managed just one hit heading into the sixth frame, but that all changed.
    Facing a three-run deficit and one out, the Coalers recorded hits from Blake Harseim, Jake Brnca (double), Austin Friddle, Payton Hutchings and Zack Nolan.

Lady Wildcats pour on the runs to win two

    Wilmington needed an extra inning to get a win Friday, as they secured a softball victory over Sandwich, 7-5.
    The two teams were pitted in a close battle when Sandwich tied the game 5-5 in the seventh inning with one run.
    The Lady Wildcats (4-3 overall, 1-0 conference) headed into the top of the eighth inning, and would record two go-ahead runs to secure the win.
    Kiley Sowa got thing started with a single, but was eventually thrown out on a fielder’s choice after Lorri Kucharski picked up a single.

Coalers kick off outdoors against Comets, Wildcats

    Coal City’s varsity boys and girls track teams hosted a triangular meet last Tuesday, as they competed against I-8 rivals Reed-Custer and Wilmington.
    On the boys side, the Comets won the meet, finishing with 76.5 team points, as Coal City claimed second (66), and Wilmington took third (28.5).
    The Lady Coalers wound up in third place, earning 29 team points. Wilmington (63) claimed first, and Reed-Custer earned second with 55 points.
    Cal Smolik had a good outing for the Coalers, as he placed in four events, claiming first in three of them.

    For the Lady Comets, they wound up securing second place with 55 team points, finishing behind Wilmington (63). Coal City took third with 29 team points.
    Vinny Verecelote led the Reed-Custer by placing first in three events.

Wildcat track teams compete in conference meet

    Wilmington’s varsity boys and girls track teams headed over to Coal City last Tuesday to compete in a triangular meet with the Coalers and Reed-Custer.
    On the girls side, the Lady Wildcats wound up with a first place finish, earning 63 team points. Reed-Custer took second with 55, followed by Coal City with 29.
    The boys wound up with a third place finish, earning 28.5 team points in the meet. Reed-Custer (76.5) claimed the top spot, followed by Coal City (66).
    Autumn Switzer helped lead the Lady Wildcats to their win, as she placed in three events.

Police seize 57 bags of heroin

A tip that a wanted man had been spotted in a Braidwood neighborhood led to an arrest, with police confiscating 57 bags of heroin.

It happened on Saturday, April 1. Around 1 p.m., Braidwood police received a call that a man who was wanted on warrants in two counties was at a home in the 200 block of north Walker Street.

Lady Comets get back on track with shutout win

    The Reed-Custer varsity softball team closed out their competition in the Providence Celtic Invitational on Saturday, as they picked up a 4-0 win over Minooka.
    The Lady Comets (4-3 overall) wound up going 2-1 during the tournament, picking up wins over Minooka and Neuqua Valley. The two wins came after losing three in a row on the schedule.
    Reed-Custer lost in the opening round of the tournament to Andrew (4-3), and suffered losses earlier in the week to Bishop McNamara (1-0) and Joliet Catholic Academy (6-5).

Varsity Club learns about adversity from guest speaker

    The Coal City Varsity Club was recently treated to an annual presentation, where the group has a former or current professional athlete come in and speak with the students.
    This year, the club had the pleasure of meeting Blake Geoffrion, a former professional hockey player, who also became the first fourth-generation player in the league’s history, after his father (Dan), grandfather (Bernie) and great-grandfather (Howie Morenz) all played.
