We have all heard of the great Chicago fire, and how quickly it spread through the city. Almost every small town in the 19th century experienced that scenario, though on a much smaller scale. Today we look at fires and those who fought them.
Although there are many brick and stone buildings in Wilmington's historic district now, most of the first buildings were wooden. That, coupled with the fact the open flame was used for heating and lighting, made it inevitable that a big fire would happen. It was just a matter of time.
