Practices for high school basketball is set to begin next week, yet for a majority of teams the hoop season is on hold. The Illinois High School Association [IHSA]—the governing body for high school athletics and activities—says it’s moving ahead with the season despite new guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health [IDPH] that raised the risk level of boys and girls basketball from medium to high, and pushed the season to the summer. In response, the Illinois State Board of Education [ISBE] has denounced the IHSA’s plan to defy the public health agency’s guidance.
