Comets present toughest test yet for Coalers

The Coalers will face a difficult task in trying to slow down 7-0 Reed-Custer when they head to Coal City for Senior Night Friday.
The Comets are averaging an astonishing 59.7 points per game and are coming off a 73-14 win over Streator, a game in which they recorded 528 yards of total offense with 304 coming on the ground.
"We've definitely got a challenge this week. Reed-Custer is a very good team. I'm excited for our guys because they will work and rise up to the challenge," said Coaler coach Francis Loughran.

With regionals less than two weeks away, the Coal Citry varsity volleyball players continue to dominate the Interstate Central Eight Conference with a 10-1 record.
The Lady Coaler didn’t skip a beat on Thursday, upending Streator in two, 25-16 and 25-20. The win improves their overall record to 20-7.
Addyson Waliczek had 10 setting assists and 10 digs.Kayla Henline had 10 setting assists, 12 digs and 1 kill.

Coalers hit the road in search of fourth straight win

With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Coal City football team heads to Peotone (4-2) Friday in a battle of teams hoping to lock up a playoff berth.
“We stressed at our Saturday meeting that getting that fifth win makes you playoff eligible. There's a lot on the line this week,” said Coaler coach Francis Loughran.
“We've won three in a row, but I want to keep that focus and have another great week of preparation and practice.”

Coalers swarm Manteno in second straight shutout

Picking up where they left off in the second half against Lisle, the Coal City football team (4-2) scored 21 first quarter points and rolled to a 48-0 shutout over Manteno (1-5) Friday in Coal City on Homecoming weekend.
Seven different Coalers scored touchdowns for Coal City who improved to 3-0 at home. They have outscored their opponents 139-17.
“Offensively, we really wanted to get off to a good start and we did that,” said head coach Francis Loughran.
“We were able to run the ball and control the clock. Defensively, the main focus was not giving up the big play.”

Coaler golfers advanced to sectional

The Coal City boys golf team competed in the IHSA Regional Wednesday at Whisper Creek golf course in Huntley.
The Coalers finished in 5th place by golfing a 359. Only the top three teams advance while the top 10 individuals qualify for sectional.
The top five teams were Marmion (315), Kaneland (344), Burlington Central (347), Sycamore (355) and the Coalers.

Hawkins’ goal a career best

Coal City lost to Peotone last week 1-8. Coal City got their lone goal from Luke Hawkins.
Even though Coal City lost, this was a big night for Luke Hawkins. This was Luke’s 9th goal this year which broke Coal City’s career varsity scoring record at 43 goals.

The Illinois Central 8 Conference golf tournament was held Monday at Wolf Creek Golf Course with the Lady Coaler golf team finishing in first place.
Emma Varnak, Kylee Kennell and Dakota Clubb earned all conference awards for finishing among the top six.
Varnak, a freshman, shot a 112 to place third among the girls standings. Reed-Custer’s Makayla Wilkins (Sr.) took top honors with a 90 and Manteno Kathrine Gaffney (Sr.) runner-up with a 97.

Still undefeated

Brad Schmitt knows what it takes to win a state championship. He has his name on two first place trophies as a Coaler.

Schmitt was a key player on the Coalers’ 1993 championship football team. So when his Lady Coaler softball team reached the championship game in 2010, he was keenly aware of the impact that season would have on his players.

As Schmitt would share with the community, “2010 was a special year with an extraordinary group of girls. A season I told them they would never forget and I bet that still holds true today.”
