It was a battle of teams trying to get their season on track after combining to score just nine points in a pair of lopsided defeats.

The Coal City football team found their footing in dominant fashion Friday, with a 41-0 shutout, while Canton left looking for directions.

"Obviously week one we struggled to get anything going and this week coach Jim Looper did a nice job of trying to fix some things in the run game because we know we have to rely on it," said head coach Francis Loughran.

Lady Coalers stay unbeaten in ICE

The Varsity Lady Coalers beat Peotone on Thursday, 25-16 and 25-15, to improve their record to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in the ICE conference.

Kayla Henline has 12 setting assists, 3 digs, 1 kill, and 1 block. Aubrey Mellen had 10 setting assists, 3 digs, 1 service ace, and 1 kill. Kenzi Henline had 7 kills and 2 digs.

Paige Walker had 6 kills and 3 digs. Emma Rodriguez had 5 kills, 7 digs, 1 service ace, and 1 block. Addison Hodgen 3 kills and 1 block. Jadyn Shaw had 8 digs. Corinna Barkley had 4 digs.

Freshmen Coalers get back on track

The Coal City Freshmen football team responded to last week's loss by handling the Little Giants from Canton by a 41-6 slaying.

Leading the way defensively was Mr. Do it All Theo Fritz's 10 tackles with two of those for a loss. AJ. McGarvey and Ty Phillips both recorded 7 stops each.

CCMS 8th graders edge G-SW

The Coal City eighth grade softball team defeated Gardner-South Wilmington in a 9-8 nail-biter on Thursday.

The score remained 1-1 through the second and third innings. In the top of the fourth, Gardner scored one run but Coal City was able to take back the lead when they put three more runs on the board, making the score 4-2 at the bottom of the fourth.

Gardner dug deep in the fifth inning scoring another three runs taking a 5-4 lead only for Coal City to tie it up with one run in the bottom of the fifth.

GSWB gets a big win to finish week

Joliet St. Paul 3 @ GSWB 7
GSWB had their hands full finishing off the week with powerhouse, Joliet St. Paul who has won seven IESA state titles since 2006, and finished runners-up three times. St. Paul struck early in the 1st behind 4 walks from Caden Christensen while not recording a hit to lead 2-0.

G-SW girls celebrate with 8th grade night win

On Thursday the Gardner-South Wilmington girls 8th grade softball team lost to Coal City 8-9, but deserve some recognition.
They played hard and fought until the very end with trying to score and come back.
The girls had a total of 7 stolen bases.
Brynn Christensen had an RBI double in the top of the 7th. Jaci Wilkey also had an RBI in the top of the 7th to score the 8th run and make it a 1-run game. Defensively, Brynn Christensen had 6 strikeouts. Autumn Manzello made a great double play to get the Lions out of a tough inning.

GSWB runners get up to speed

The GSWB Cross Country Team headed to Minooka for their second meet of the season. Athletes competed against much larger schools and did an awesome job!
Mikayla Vermaat competed in the JV 1 mile race and ran her best time of 7:41. She was able to place in the top 25. Mikayla continues to improve and get stronger each meet.

Goals remain same for experienced Coalers

Take an all-conference running back and mix in multiple starters from a defense that gave up only 6.5 points per game in their four home wins, and you have a strong foundation for a successful football program.

The Coal City football team is aiming for their 12th consecutive playoff appearance and seems primed to do so given the amount of pieces returning.

"Coming off the playoffs and a playoff win, we're hoping to return there and finish top of the conference. These guys have made it a goal to go further than we did last year," said head coach Francis Loughran.

Superlights win over the Wolfpack

The Coal City Miners entered Wolfpack territory on Saturday in Ottawa, coming up with one of four victories for the day.

Superlights

The Miners Superlights improved to 3-0 with yet another shut out, 18-0, against the Ottawa Wolfpack.

Offensively, Brady Loughran led the charge with 2 touchdowns and several good runs. Cole Watson and Levi Hennessy connected on a 20-yard pass and catch, with Watson finishing it off with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Young Coaler fans need to be accompanied by an adult at football games

The City Coaler football team opens the 2023 season with a home game against Morris Friday, and the start of a new season brings a change in the school’s attendance guidelines.

High school administration announced on Tuesday that due to safety and behavior concerns, the school district will now require all elementary and middle school students to be accompanied by an adult.

Students who arrive without an adult or not in possession of a high school identification card will be turned away at the gate.
