Best baseball players in the ICE

The baseball season in the Illinois Central Eight came to an end with Coal City being eliminated by Joliet Catholic Academy in the Sectional championship game on Saturday.
The Coalers, Comets and ‘Cats had many standouts, 10 of which were given the nod as All-Conference players.

The first three games will define the Coalers season

It’s never too early to talk Coaler football now that the 2022 schedule is locked in.
Last fall the Coalers finished third in the Illinois Central Eight Conference and will be looking to continue the playoff tradition with a new group of players.
If the Coalers advance into the playoffs they will be seeing familiar foes closer to home as opposed to what was being proposed.

Great turnout at Lady Coaler basketball camp

There was a lot of excitement as Coal City’s annual youth girls basketball camp drew over 50 members this past week.
The majority of the numbers came from the sixth, seventh and eighth graders but the third and fourth grade level still brought in a combined 20 campers which only can mean good things for the Lady Coalers moving forward.

Comets, ‘Cats, Coalers to play in Braidwood Shootout

Reed-Custer will host its Braidwood Shootout for the first time in two years starting Tuesday when girls and boys basketball players will do battle against 31 other teams from around the state.
The Braidwood Shootout will start with the girls side of the bracket on Tuesday when Reed-Custer and Gardner-South Wilmington begin the tournament in the Reed-Custer Middle School gym at 8 a.m.

Five Coalers sign to play sports in college

Coal City High School recently had a signing day for five student athletes who will be playing college sports.
Hart to IVCC
Standout goalie Colin Hart signed a letter of intent to play college soccer at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.
Hart said the team was welcoming and that’s what won him over.

Local high schoolers among top trap shooters in Illinois

Six local high school students shot their way to the top of the leader board in the USA Clay Target League.
Over 1,500 students are taking home awards this spring after participating in the USA Clay Target League that offers programs in 34 states.
A record-breading 31,688 student athletes participated in the USA Clay Target League spring season with athletes competing from 1,466 school- approved teams nationwide.

ICE names best kickers in conference

Nine area soccer players were named standouts in the Illinois Central Eight Conference as they were voted onto the ICE All-Conference team.
Reed-Custer (10-6, 4-3) made it all the way to the regional championship game, falling to Peotone in the title match. They still finished fifth in the ICE Conference, giving the All-Conference nod to Brooklyn Harding and Taylin Pippenger.

Micetich seventh in state track hurldles

Coal City’s Christian Micetch earned himself a spot on the podium during the Illinois High School Association Boys track state finals which were held at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday.
Micetich went down for one event on Thursday and he made it count as he qualified for the state finals with a time of 41.38 in the preliminary round of the boys 300 meter hurdles.

Sweet 16 run comes to an end for Coalers

The Coal City baseball team had their Sweet 16 season come to an end in 7-0 shutout loss to Joliet Catholic Academy during the Class 2A JCA Sectional Championship game on Saturday.
The Coalers were unable to get much of anything going on JCA starter T.J. Schlageter, who gave up just one hit which was a Nolan Berger single.
Schlageter went an inning before allowing the first hit to Berger but the Coal City bats were unable to capitalize on it as two strikeouts ended that threat.

Lady Coalers wrap up impressive season

The Coal City softball team had their amazing season come to an end in a 9-2 loss to Bishop McNamara during the Herscher Sectional semifinal game on Wednesday.
The Lady Coalers did something that hasn’t been done in the 12 years and that was capture a regional title with a very young team.
There was one senior, Kaitlyn Jasper. The rest of the team was comprised of six sophomores, just one junior and three freshmen, who will all be back having a good shot to capture an Illinois Central Eight Conference title in 2023.
