Speaking of heroes, where have they all gone? We just don’t run across the likes of Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, or Anne Frank these days. Or do we?
Actually, we do, and one of those heroes hides in plain sight in Braidwood. His legal name is Walter Kozielski. He celebrated his 57th birthday on April 16. By the time you read his story, you’ll agree he’s a good guy, maybe even a hero (though he’ll probably deny it).

Area students enlightened by solar eclipse

The total solar eclipse was an especially blissful occasion for three teachers at Reed-Custer Elementary School. As the moon slowly phased across the sun, Jayme Miller (science), Deona Walsh (librarian) and Caitlyn Wilkerson (math), took advantage of this rare wonder of nature to teach students the fundamentals of science, the trajectory of solar travel and how to research the topic of solar eclipse

Braidwood Pantry adds hours to meet demand

The Community Care Center–Braidwood Food Pantry, 112 S. Center St., Braidwood, has extended its hours. The food pantry is open Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and again from 3 to 5 p.m. The late afternoon hours were added so that individuals who work will have the opportunity to obtain food.

Braidwood Police offering Citizen Academy

At the Braidwood City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 26, Commissioner Ron Wilczak informed residents of the police department’s Citizens Police Academy coming up on May 2.
“This is meant to strengthen the partnership between the police department and the citizens we serve here,” Wilczak said. “So, we're opening lines of communication with this and giving people a chance to be informed citizens.”
Classes begin 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, and run Thursdays until June 20 at Braidwood City Hall.

Love of history and ‘old school attitude’ are behind the success of BAHS

It was perhaps inevitable that Carida Davis, 68, would end up becoming a “historian.” After all, she happens to be the great, great niece of Ulysses Grant. She’s also related to Jefferson Davis. To top it off, her grandfather designed and built the coal mine and time clock exhibits at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
“History has always been instilled in me,” Davis said. “So, when the museum was being planned, it was sort of natural for me to want to be a part of it. It is where I belong.”

The Braidwood Park District’s Annual Children’s Easter egg hunt in the Old Smokey City Park will take place on Saturday, March 23, starting promptly at 1 p.m. with the youngest age group. Age groups are as follows:
• 1-3 years (Tee-Ball Field) Parents/Guardians may walk with their children as the children pick up eggs.
• 4-6 years (north boys baseball field) If necessary, one parent or guardian may walk with the child as the children pick up the eggs.

Braidwood Knights to have corned beef dinner

The Braidwood Knights of Columbus Council #1574 will be hosting a Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner Thursday, March 14 from 4-7 pm in Father White Hall 110 S. School Street, Braidwood.
For a free will donation dinners will include corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potato.
All proceeds will benefit Immaculate Conception Church Braidwood and The KCCouncil Functions.
Stations of the cross will begin at 6 p.m. and everyone is welcome to join in the church.

As of Monday, Polar Plunge pledges reached nearly $91,700, far exceeding the $80,000 goal.
Fundraising for this year’s Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, will be held Saturday, March 9 at Braidwood Recreation Club.

Get a prom dress for $5

Godley Park District’s gymnasium will transform into a prom boutique this weekend to prepare for the influx of hundreds of local high school girls and their parents searching for the perfect formal dress.
This Saturday, March 2, marks the 11th year of Melissa’s Closet and Crystal’s Jewelry Box, an annual event held to provide girls with prom dresses for just $5, as well as jewelry, shoes and purses to complete their look.
Over the years the organization has helped dress 4,500 girls at an affordable cost for one of the biggest days of their high school careers.
